Samuel Northrup Castle and Amos Starr Cooke began their humble business partnership by operating a general store. The entrepreneurial spirit and vision of the two founders of this company sparked the creation of a worldwide leader in the food, transportation and real estate industries.
David H. Murdock, current chairman, president and chief executive officer, along with his management team at Castle & Cooke, continue to focus on growth and are constantly searching for opportunities to acquire quality assets or businesses to meet this important goal.
The Murdock team has acquired many private companies and taken numerous publicly traded companies private, including FCA Industries, Pacific Holding Corporation, International Mining Corporation, Pato Consolidated Mining, Cannon Mills, Continental Group, Flexi-Van Leasing, Castle & Cooke, and Dole Food Company.
The Cannon Mills site in Kannapolis, NC has undergone dramatic changes. When completed, the campus will incorporate over one million square feet of office and laboratory space, 350,000 square feet of new retail space, a hotel and wellness center, a new city government center, medical offices, an auditorium, a 60,000 square foot community college facility focused on biotechnogy workforce training, and over 700 apartment and townhome units.
The site also contains a 7 acre central park, as well as bicycle paths and running trails. Also located on the campus is the David H. Murdock Research Institiute (dhmri.org), which houses one of the largest and most advanced collections of scientific equipment in the world, including state-of-the-art technology in genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, and featuring nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, microscopy, and clinical discovery.
