Knox: Kaleidoscope a kick for Kannapolis

Every once in a while you get completely caught off guard and taken totally by surprise … in the best way possible.

At least that was the feeling of several of the volunteers behind the Kaleidoscope Cultural Arts Festival in downtown Kannapolis this past Saturday. It’s only the second year organizers with the Kannapolis Arts group have put the festival together, and April 26 was the first of four festivals this year. About 90 artists and performers participated, with a total of about 500 people enjoying arts and culture in downtown Kannapolis.

Fantasia to attend N.C. Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony

Fantasia Barrino, the 2004 “American Idol” winner who hails from High Point, has been confirmed as a guest for this year’s North Carolina Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony in October.

The ceremony will be held Oct. 16 at the historic Gem Theatre, 111 W 1st St., Kannapolis.

Officials have confirmed that Fantasia will attend the event, but still need to confirm whether she will perform.

Pony power: 850 Mustangs cruise into Kannapolis

As home to the Charlotte Motor Speedway and zMax Dragway, Cabarrus County is no stranger to horsepower. But the sight of thousands of Ford Mustangs prowling around the county over the past few days as part of the Mustang’s 50th anniversary won’t soon be forgotten.

On Friday night, about 850 Mustangs assembled at zMax Dragway before heading out to downtown Kannapolis in a bid to break the Guinness Book of World Records mark for the longest caravan. Organizers said they still have to submit documentation to the records company to learn if they set the world record.

Kannapolis honors Mike Curb

Dozens of Kannapolis leaders and businesspeople came to a lunch Monday to honor Mike Curb, who created two of the city’s landmarks and is known worldwide for his many accomplishments.

Curb is the owner of Curb Records, the longest-running record label still owned by its founder. He is the former president of MGM records, the former lieutenant governor of California, and he owned race cars driven by Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty.
